1. The 4th Peace World Forum
The 4th Peace World Forum, entitled “Families and the World’s social background: from the 60’s until today”and promoted by Lugano’s Culture Ticino Network Association, was held from 8 to 10 November, 2014, at the Università della Svizzera italiana and Palazzo dei Congressi, in Lugano.
The mission of this 4th Peace World Forum was the intention to get the culture of peace and solidarity closer to all the generations, through convivial moments and custom made activities, designed around the idea of “peace from within”. It is fundamental to understand that Peace have to start first from ourselves, from families and small groups, in order to be spread around the world, carried by core values such as dialogue and solidarity.
1.1 Saturday, November 8th, 2014
The Peace World Forum inauguration was held on Saturday, November 8th, 2014, with well-known personalities such as Piero Martinoli, President of the Università della Svizzera italiana; National counselor Marco Romano; Lugano’s city counselor Cristina Zanini Barzaghi, and many others who attended to launch the Peace World Forum activities, greet all the guests and introduce them to all the foundations’ stands. Hosting high cultural lectures the Peace World Forum, as stated by Marco Romano, did become “an integral part of our territory’s reality”.
After a musical introduction, Margherita Maffeis, Founding President of Culture Ticino Network, greeted all participants and guests and introduced the first round table of the day, entitled “Peace relationships”. The lectures were held by many national and international-level speakers, such as Piera-Levi Montalcini, President of Fondazione Rita Levi-Montalcini Onlus; Fabio Merlini, Regional director of IUFFP (Federal Academic Institute for Professional Formation), Professor in Human sciences’ epistemology at Lausanne’s University and Director of the Eranos Foundation; Cornelia Riep, Immediate Past President BPW Ticino; and Monica Santoro, teacher at Università degli Studi di Milano, specialist in the field of familial sociology. Moderator of the round table was Riccardo Fanciola, RSI journalist.
1.2 Sunday, November 9th, 2014
The Forum’s second day has been rich of events, the most important being the second round table entitled “The idea of peace within the national and international social context” held by Piera Levi-Montalcini, President Of Fondazione Rita Levi-Montalcini Onlus; Peter Praxmarer, professor and Coordinating Secretary of EMICC (European Master in Intercultural Communication); Carla Del Ponte, former Swiss attorney general, former Chief Prosecutor of two United Nations international criminal law tribunals, and member of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic; Julia Schürch, associate of Doctors Without Borders; and Teresa Cadete, author and member of both Pen International and the Writers for Peace Committee.
1.3 Monday, November 10th, 2014
The Peace World Forum’s final day was a great success, with the attendance of more than 430 students and teachers. Culture Ticino Network has a tradition of dedicating the last day of the World Forum to schools, and for this particular occasion, we set up twelve different workshop, whose social and cultural value was recognized by the DECS (Department of Education, Culture, and Sport). Workshops of arts, acting, IT’s, and technological knowledge, all realized in collaboration with great foundations, associations and well-known personalities such as SINPLUS, Associazione Atkye, Paolo Attivissimo, Locarno’s Teatro Paravento, Associazione Gioventù per i Diritti Umani, Zonta Club Lugano, Doctors Without Borders, and many more.
2. Gala Dinner & Solidarity’s lunch
The Peace World Forum is well known for its warm and enjoyable convivial moments, such as the 70’s inspired Saturday’s Gala Dinner entitled “The will to eat and to help”, at Lugano’s Villa Sassa, and the Sunday’s lunch at Lugano’s Hotel Ceresio, entitled “The taste of solidarity”. Both events were livened up by the presence of Maristella Polli and Giuliana Campana, whose book inspired the whole Gala Dinner’s menu.
3. The “Solidarity’s Minivan”
Culture Ticino Network’s hard work has paid off: the “Solidarity’s Minivan” for destitute and low-income families will be a reality!
Thanks to the Association’s commitment and to its network, many new supporters, such as the Evangelical Foundation Matilde Witzig and the Fidinam Foundation, joined us and made this project possible. The Solidarity’s Minivan will be “officially” delivered in March 2015 to the Diurnal Center GenerazionePiù in Lugano.
In the meantime the gathering of funds for the “Solidarity’s Minivan” goes on, in order to sustain its maintenance costs.
