Walking for peace

Edition 2024

The Culture Ticino Network Association in Lugano is pleased to invite you to this special 10th Anniversary of the cross-border event WALKING FOR PEACE!

To celebrate this important anniversary, we have organised, in collaboration with our Culture Ticino Network Association, our Italian-Swiss group, the Tavolo della Pace Alto Verbano, as well as various Italian and Swiss municipalities, 3 significant events on the themes of “Peace and the rights of future generations” in Ticino and nearby Italy.

Our Association is also Partner of the Third World March for Peace and Nonviolence, which will begin on October 2, 2024, and end on January 5, 2025, in Costa Rica. The events on the schedule will therefore have global visibility, and moreover, an international delegation will participate in our main events during the 12th World Forum for Peace, which will take place in various venues in Lugano in November.

The first event of this special 10th edition will be the Cultural Solidarity Event, which will be held on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at Palazzo Verbania in Luino from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, featuring renowned guests, entertainment, and refreshments. The central event will be, as previously announced, the highly anticipated 10th edition of the cross-border event “Walking for Peace” which will take place on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The concluding event will be the Solidarity Concert, which will be held on Sunday, October 13, 2024, at the Sala Polivalente (Bennet) in Lavena Ponte Tresa from 3:30 PM to 6:00 PM, featuring important guests and international artists.

You are all invited to this special event, organised in collaboration with the “Tavolo della pace dell’Alto Verbano,” which will begin with welcome greetings from guests and our president Margherita Maffeis-Natale. Following this, there will be a significant “Round Table with Renowned Speakers” titled “Peace and the Rights of Future Generations”.

Speakers will include priest Diego Fognini and the writer Walimohammad Atai. The event will be moderated by Rosi Brandi, chief editor of Prealpina. There will also be musical entertainment featuring the extraordinary participation of Ballafon D’jambè Band (African percussion with Antonio Testa) and Natalia Carpenco (violin). Finally, there will be a reception to conclude the event with a convivial moment.

About our speakers:

Father Diego Fognini, a frontier priest, is the founder of the “La Centralina” non-profit organisation in Morbegno, a volunteer organisation established in 1991 with the aim of providing support to people with alcohol and substance dependencies. He is also the author of the book “Love Excludes No One.”

Walimohammad Atai is a young Afghan dedicated to human rights, following in the footsteps of his father, a doctor and political dissident killed by the Taliban. After opening a secular school in his village, he was accused by the Taliban of being an infidel spy. Following a miraculous escape from an assassination attempt, he decided to flee Afghanistan and move to Italy, where he began extensive work in information dissemination and interreligious and intercultural dialogue. He is also the founder of the FAWN (Free Afghan Women Now) Association, which defends the rights of Afghan women.

Rosi Brandi has been a professional since 1991 and is the chief editor in news at the daily newspaper La Prealpina in Varese.

The second of our three significant events will be the unmissable “Walking for Peace,” taking place on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, between Malcantone and Varesotto, marking its important 10th edition this year.

The second of our three significant events will be the unmissable “Walking for Peace,” taking place on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, between Malcantone and Varesotto, marking its important 10th edition this year.

Our Walk represents a special opportunity to unite communities in a shared commitment towards a brighter future. It is open not only to schools in Ticino and Italy but also to the entire population.

It is important to raise awareness about these issues as much as possible, so that future generations can grow up in a world where their rights are respected and protected. We aim to explain to children and young people the importance of a culture of peace and to educate them about this value. Teaching them what Peace means should start immediately, raising the new generations’ awareness of mutual respect and solidarity.

Peace is not just the absence of conflict, but the presence of justice, hope, opportunity, and love for one another. Educating for Peace means building bridges of understanding and dialogue, recognising and valuing differences as assets rather than barriers. It is a journey that requires continuous commitment but brings with it the promise of a world where every child can grow up free from fear, capable of realising their potential, and contributing to the common good.

Our Walk aims to be a place of meeting and reflection where every step taken together represents a step up towards a more peaceful and harmonious world. Peace is built day by day, through concrete actions and the willingness to listen and understand each other. Only in this way can we create a better society.

We invite you to participate in large numbers, bringing friends and family with you, to make this day unforgettable and to contribute concretely to the building of a better world.

Following this, there will be the World Music performance by the duo Sanzamumu and other surprises.

At the end of the event, we will have a concluding and interactive refreshment together with our Culture Ticino Network Association for a convivial moment.

We invite everyone to join us for these three significant events. No matter how big or small your contribution may seem, every act of peace is a step towards a conflict-free future. Only together and united for Peace can we build bridges of understanding and a better world.

These events are not just opportunities to learn and grow but also moments to celebrate the Peace and solidarity that unite us. Come discover new perspectives, share your experiences, and find inspiration in the stories of those who have already embarked on this journey. Every participation counts and every smile can make a difference. A world of peace starts with each of us, with small steps that together can become a significant change. Don’t miss these events!
